TIFF: Lunching with Jude Law for Artists for Peace and Justice

One of the most anticipated TIFF events is the Artists for Peace and Justice Lunch held in the residential Toronto neighbourhood of Rosedale. Yesterday, we woke up to sheets of rain running down our window panes – not ideal weather for an outdoor function. But as the 3:00 kick off neared, the clouds were blown away and laser beams of light shone a spotlight on the grand tent.

Known for drawing in such talent as Gerard Butler, Eddie Vedder and Olivia Wilde, the APJ backyard fundraiser benefits the poorest communities in Haiti by facilitating economic growth and education. This year’s event, co-hosted by Jude Law and Trudie Styler alongside Paul Haggis and George Stroumoulopoulos, brought together musicians Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida, K’naan, and members of Arcade Fire.

The warm whipping wind swept up hemlines and I found myself holding tightly to the skirt of my dress so as not to bare my knickers to the A-list crowd. Sweet green grass wrapped women’s designer heels as we sunk into the damp ground. Those of us in stilettos eyed others in wedges or flats with green envy as we precariously walked on the balls of our feet. Yet these nuances were quickly forgotten as soon as the program began.

With the best view in the tent and sitting between the beautiful Trudie Styler and inspiring Paul Haggis, I listened in awe as Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace joined wife Chantal Kreviazuk in a hypnotizing duet. It was followed by a riveting solo by Chantal, who graciously requested silence from the crowd. Her voice hit us like thousands of delicate butterfly wings fluttering against our faces. I was transfixed. Completely. Tunnel vision focused on her.

The performance was followed by a presentation by APJ that made my heart move. It made me want to get involved. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one in that tent who felt the same. The live auction kicked off with a bang with items such as a table at the Hollywood Awards, VIP tickets to tonight’s MAC Viva Glam Fashion Cares 25, and a luxury trip to Nassau. The crowd had money to spend. And spend they did. Mid-auction, a buzz went up around the room as Jude Law made his entrance. With a hello to me, the handsome Brit and his friend took a seat on the now vacant space next to me on the couch. Be still my heart.

What was most entertaining to watch was how people reacted to him and Ian Somerhalder (blue eyes piercing), who now sat across from me. Flash bulbs lit up their every move. How do people in the lime light live life when every camera is directed at them? Does one ever get used to it?

The last item on the auctioneer’s list brought tears to eyes, including mine. Two boys from Haiti were introduced to us to thank the group for their generosity. Their voices held such gratitude and passion that not a soul wasn’t struck by it. Hands raised all around the room – each wanting to sponsor youth in Haiti.

Before Arcade Fire picked up, I took the time to stand in the sun shine with a glass of white. Absorbing the love around me. The caring. The giving. I stood there alone with a goofy smile spread across my face listening to K’naan enthrall.

I returned inside just in time to catch members of Arcade Fire (Win Butler, Régine Chassagne and Sarah Neufeld) part the crowd with their instruments – Win climbing over couches and benches to reach the stage while strumming his guitar. Everyone’s eyes were sparkling, including those of the tall Alexander Skarsgård. The notes of the music were candy coated. Sugary sweet candy worms that got under our skin and wiggled about. The crowd collectively moved to the music.

As the final tune faded away, the event came to an end. Most, if not all, inspired to lend a hand in Haiti and other struggling communities around the world.

While my pocketbook isn’t as heavy as others at the event (an impressive $550,000 was raised), I’d love to find alternative ways to contribute to such a wonderful cause.

Lessons from TIFF:

1. There truly is beauty in giving.

2. Live music calls for attention. Respect the musicians and keep quiet.

3. We are all just people cut from the same cloth. We all have the same core emotions, dreams and inspirations.

4. Always wear presentable panties when donning a short skirt. You never know when the wind may pick up.

5. Contribution comes in all forms. Find your niche and donate money, time or love.
